Boulevard of 40,000 Unbroken Dreams
What started in 1995 as a soccer field fundraiser is now the largest single-day celebration of vintage car culture in the world. Earlier this month, the Woodward Dream Cruise brought together 40,000 cars and close to 1.5 million spectators.

The Plumber and the Mayor
As the legend goes, local plumber Nelson House, former Ferndale Mayor Pamela McCullough, and other associates wanted to raise funds for local kids to play soccer.
So, in 1995, they turned to what the Detroit area is best known for, and organized a nostalgic 1950s-1960s-heavy car parade down the city’s historic Woodward Avenue.
Woodward Avenue
Woodward Avenue was already well-known as a long stretch of Detroit asphalt popular for car cruising since the 1940s. In the late 1950s, the venue became popular for unofficial street racing.
The folklore about automobile company engineers using Woodward Avenue as a test bed for their muscle car prototypes is all over the internet.
As the story goes, engineers from General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler occasionally drove unbadged test mules and experimental packages down the Woodward Avenue strip late at night to see how they stacked up against street racers.
One particular Pontiac advertisement even showed a GTO on Woodward Avenue with the tag line, “You know the rest of the story.”
After a public outcry about condoning street racing, Pontiac had to quickly pull that ad out of circulation.
Dream Cruise is Born
The Dream Cruise organizers back in 1995 were hoping for a turnout of around 25,000 spectators. What they got was more like 250,000 to see thousands of classic cars.
Needless to say, they easily secured the funding needed for the community soccer field.
The Woodward Dream Cruise was born.
30 Dream Cruises Later
They’ve had a Dream Cruise on Woodward Avenue every year since it started, with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic (but some rebellious dreamers held an unofficial Dream Cruise that year).
That makes this officially the year of the 30th Dream Cruise (or the 31st if you include the unofficial Dream Cruise).
The number of cars participating in the Dream Cruise now hovers around 40,000, with the number of spectators estimated at 1.5 million across a 16-mile route.
Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is not just classic muscle cars. The Dream Cruise repertoire spans a much wider spectrum:
Custom and Collector Cars: These run the gamut from George Barris-style custom cars to painstakingly restored vintage cars.

Hot Rods and Street Rods: These include the traditional hot rods like the ones based on the 1932 Fords, to the new American hot rods like the tuned Hondas and Nissans from recent years.
Modern Supercars: These include high-end exotic sports cars and contemporary high-performance cars.
Muscle Cars: These are the classic high-performance American V8 models like the ones from the 1950s-early 1970s.
Trucks and Specialty Vehicles: These include older pickups, commercial utility vehicles, and unique multi-wheel trucks and vehicles from more recent years.
Unusual Cars: And then there are the cars that defy easy classification. They are unusual. They are not necessarily cars or trucks, but they are usually motorized and able to parade down the street.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is now recognized as the largest one-day gathering and celebration of classic car enthusiasts in the world.
How Big is Big?
Today’s Woodward Dream Cruise has numerous corporate sponsors and official partners to support the massive annual event. As stated by the organizers, these include:
Presenting Sponsors – Major automakers, most notably Ford Motor Company, have served as the main presenting sponsor for multiple consecutive years. Other automotive-related companies like Ziebart have also filled this role.

Media Partners – Local and regional media organizations, including WXYZ-TV Channel 7 and Audacy Radio, have provided official promotional support and event coverage.
Gold Partners – Financial and specialty automotive companies, such as Bank of America and Fox Factory Vehicles, sponsor the event at the gold tier.
LA Car at the Dream Cruise
Our Detroit Bureau Photographer Mark Dapoz has attended every Woodward Dream Cruise, including an unofficial one held during the pandemic in 2020.
For 2026, Mark did an outstanding job of capturing the highlights of the Cruise. In addition to the ones shown here, you can view his photo gallery on LA Car’s Facebook page.

Says Mark’s brother Chuck (both Detroit-born and bred):
“The Dream Cruise is a big deal in Detroit. A lot of people from Southeast Michigan attend it, and there are attendees from across the county and even outside of the United States.
Multiple TV stations cover it, with live street and drone shots plus interviews with people sharing stories about their rides.”
The Results Are In
The 2026 Woodward Dream Cruise took place on August 15th (as usual, on the third Saturday of August)—and retained its status as the world’s largest single-day automotive event. The cruise ran from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
