Area 21: Czinger opens factory in Torrance to build it's 3D-printed supercars

Torrance, California is no stranger to car companies. For decades, it was the North American headquarters for both Toyota and Lexus. The Shelby Racing Company once resided in Torrance, as did the Shelby Parts Company (later Shelby Autosports). For over 30 years, it’s been the home of American Honda.

And now Torrance is the home of Area 21, the manufacturing site of Czinger Vehicles. The proximity to so many partner companies evidently played a part in the decision to make Torrance the home of Czinger’s manufacturing center.

On September 28, 2024, Czinger celebrated its grand opening of Area 21. Founders Kevin and Lukas Czinger were on hand to showcase the factory’s launch, as were a number of the Model 21C (the one with the wing in back) and 21C V Max (the one with the long tail) ultra supercars. Both models have the distinction of being the first production vehicles designed and manufactured from the ground up using 3D printer technology.

The Czinger 21C V Max is distinguished from the winged 21C by its long tail. The vehicle sports three electric motors and one flat-crank DOHC V8 that cranks out 1,250 horsepower.

The specifications speak volumes for the advanced technology built into the 21C. The car combines parallel hybrid and Through The Road (TTR) hybrid drivetrains with three electric motors - one advanced axial flux motor generator unit and two high output electric motors with torque-vectoring function (for efficient wheel control) and one 2.88 liter flat-crank DOHC twin turbo V8 internal combustion engine, transmitted through a seven-speed sequential transaxle with a hydraulic actuated multi-plate clutch. The hybrid system produces a combined output of 1,250 horsepower at 11,500 RPM. A Blackbird version of the 21C is said to be available that cranks out 1,350 horsepower. Earlier this summer, the 21C set a new fastest production car record at the Good Wood Festival of Speed.
