The 2024 BMW i5 is BMW’s latest entry in the electric sedan lineup, bridging the familiar refinement of the BMW 5 Series with modern EV technology. This model comes in two normal versions: the i5 eDrive40 and the i5 xDrive40. Then there is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, which is another story alltogether, as that is a brutal racecar with four doors and 590 (electrified) horses.
Both the non-M models offer unique experiences with distinct power and driving characteristics. The eDrive40 is a rear-wheel-drive option geared more towards efficient commuting and smooth handling, while the xDrive40, the one I spent the most time with, adds a dual-motor setup for all-wheel drive and more power, making it the perfect pick for anyone craving that spirited BMW feel.
The i5 eDrive40 delivers 335 horsepower and up to 295 miles of range, which feels like a nice middle ground for those who want solid performance without sacrificing range too much. The i5 xDrive40 adds a few horses, totaling 389, and four wheel drive. It’s a fun ride with plenty of pep, but has a lower range of 250 miles.
Exterior
The exterior of the BMW i5 is a balanced mix of sportiness and subtle elegance. It retains the recognizable BMW kidney grille, though it’s closed off for aerodynamics, giving the car a smooth and clean look. The lines are sleek, and the silhouette is unmistakably BMW—a look that merges well with its high-end image. I noticed how the front headlights give a sharp, slightly aggressive feel, and I think it sets the i5 apart from more understated EV sedans, giving it a bit more personality.
From the side, the i5 has that elongated, classic sedan profile, which BMW pulls off well. The lines flow naturally, and the slightly sloped roof gives it a sporty, almost coupe-like aesthetic. The i5 xDrive40 feels right at home in an urban setting or on a winding backroad, as it seems equally refined and aggressive, ready to stand out at a charging station or a nice dinner spot. The whole car exudes this "silent confidence," especially in darker colors with the larger wheels, which I’d highly recommend if you’re going for that high-end, executive look.
Interior
Stepping into the i5 feels like entering a mobile lounge with a driver’s edge. The interior is just as luxurious as you’d expect from BMW, with high-quality materials throughout. Soft-touch materials, leather, and brushed metal elements cover the cabin, giving it that luxurious, tactile quality. The seats in the xDrive40 are exceptionally comfortable, providing support without being overly firm, which makes longer trips very enjoyable. In terms of space, there’s ample legroom both in the front and back, making it an excellent option if you regularly drive with passengers.
BMW has really focused on comfort here. The ride is smooth and quiet, thanks to the EV platform, but it’s also adaptive enough that you still feel a connection to the road. The cabin is whisper-quiet, so even at highway speeds, there’s minimal wind or road noise, which makes the i5 feel right at home on longer drives. The seats are also heated and ventilated, making the i5 a year-round option for comfort in various climates.
Tech Features
The tech in the BMW i5 is cutting-edge and intuitive. The dual curved display, which combines the instrument cluster and infotainment screen into one, is eye-catching and user-friendly. It’s powered by BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 software, which I found both responsive and customizable. The system supports all the essentials, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which connect seamlessly. BMW also includes a head-up display, which is clear and crisp, keeping essential information in your line of sight without being intrusive.
Another standout feature is the array of driver assistance systems, such as lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control. These features work well on the highway, where the i5 can practically drive itself with minimal input. That being said, I found the parking assistant particularly helpful for city driving, as it handles parallel parking flawlessly. One downside is the reliance on touch controls for climate and some other functions; sometimes, a good old-fashioned knob is just easier.
Driving Characteristics
Driving the i5 xDrive40 is where it truly shines. This model feels nimble for an EV sedan of its size. The acceleration is smooth but confident, and you really feel the 335 horsepower come alive, especially in Sport mode, where the throttle becomes more responsive, and the suspension stiffens a bit. Steering is precise, giving you that classic BMW connection to the road. In the i5, you’re not just getting from point A to point B; you’re actually enjoying the journey.
For everyday driving, the i5 is well-mannered and comfortable, with regenerative braking that can be adjusted to suit your preference. On highways, the i5’s stability makes it a great choice for long-distance cruising. The adaptive suspension does a great job of absorbing road imperfections, keeping the ride smooth even on rougher surfaces. However, in the sportier settings, the ride can feel a bit firm, which might not be ideal for some.
Notable Features
A highlight of the i5 is its range and charging capabilities. With the xDrive40, I got nearly 250 miles of range, which is a solid offering in this category. BMW has equipped it with fast-charging capabilities, allowing you to gain significant charge (maybe even 80%) in about 30 minutes at a high-speed charging station. This makes road trips much more convenient and ensures that you won’t be spending too much time waiting around for a charge.
One potential drawback, however, is the limited cargo space. The i5 doesn’t have a front trunk (“frunk”) like many other EVs, and the rear trunk, though decent, could feel a bit limiting if you’re accustomed to the larger cargo spaces of SUVs or crossovers. It’s a minor drawback, but something to consider if storage space is important to you.
Summary
The 2024 BMW i5 xDrive40 is an impressive blend of BMW’s luxury sedan heritage with the new EV era. It’s a refined and capable choice that feels at home in urban environments and on longer journeys. The overall package is compelling - especially for anyone seeking a luxury electric sedan with a touch of athleticism and plenty of tech. For that buyer, the i5 xDrive40 is a strong contender. What I want to know is: When do we get the touring (station wagon) version of the i5 in the US, not just the extraordinary M5 Touring?
