Fontana Unified School District Graduates will be individually recognized via a special drive-up ceremony in pit road of the SoCal racetrack.

The effects of the coronavirus have been felt by everyone all over the world. However, seniors graduating in 2020 are among the people uniquely affected. Missing their graduation ceremony means a lack of closure and is tremendously difficult to these kids. A high school graduation is culmination of their childhood efforts at school, and to have that taken away is heartbreaking.

That won’t be the case for graduating seniors in the Fontana Unified School District.

Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, will host graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020. Graduating seniors from multiple high schools in the district will be individually recognized and celebrated between June 2-4. With support from family and friends at their sides, the ceremonies will be unique.

“I’m honored that our facility will host so many outstanding young men and women as they are recognized and celebrated for their academic achievements,” said Dave Allen, Auto Club Speedway president. “These are unprecedented times facing our community and I’m proud that we can utilize Auto Club Speedway’s unique ability to safely and responsibly host several memorable high school graduations.”

The three-day event will begin on June 2, when Summit High School and A.B. Miller High School will hold their ceremonies. On June 3, Henry J. Kaiser High School and Fontana High School will take their turns. To wrap it up on June 4, Jurupa Hills High School will celebrate their graduates. The ceremonies will take place on the infield and in pit road and will offer enough room to practice social distancing to keep everyone safe.

“We have a remarkable group of seniors, and we are committed to commemorating their accomplishments in a safe and exceptional manner,” said Randal S. Bassett, Fontana Unified superintendent. “We are incredibly thankful to Auto Club Speedway for helping provide a one-of-a-kind, memorable graduation experience for our Class of 2020.”

Traditions such as valedictorian and salutatorian speeches will take place along with the turning of the tassels. Each graduate is allowed one car with family joining them. The Class of 2020 will wear commemorative masks and will be allowed to leave their vehicles to receive a diploma and take a photo.

It’ll definitely be a graduation for the books. Congratulations Class of 2020!
