The long awaited ‘super wagon’ is finally coming to the States. Here’s everything you need to know.
The American market is not kind to wagons, much less performance wagons. Luckily for us, Audi has said screw that and is bringing over the newest RS 6 Avant stateside. The car looks fantastic and has bonkers performance. We’re hoping the wagon fans show up and convince Audi to keep sending us these supercars.
Engine and drivetrain
A 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine powers the standard Quattro® AWD system and the sport differential, which can direct nearly all torque to one wheel. The V8 produces 591 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque, all wrangled by an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Avant sprints from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The 4.0L engine bellows a robust sound which can be adjusted using the Audi drive select system. A more pronounced Sport exhaust is also available. The optional RS ceramic brakes increase the electronically limited top track speed from 155 mph to 190 mph.
The RS 6 Avant has specially tuned adaptive air suspension and can be adjusted by the driver to high performance or comfort dynamics. A RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control is optional and uses steel springs and adjustable dampers to counteract body roll. Six driver modes are available, ranging from casual to performance. All-wheel steering is standard and also enables the steering angle to be adjusted independently.
The RS 6 Avant features a specific honeycomb structure within the Singleframe® grille finished in gloss black. The exterior features many RS-specific parts, including the rear bumper with diffuser, flared wheel arches and an RS exhaust system. The standard wheels are 21-inch RS rims with summer tires. 22-inch wheels are available with the Black Optic or Carbon Optic packages.
Stepping inside the RS 6 Avant, the center console features a 10.1-inch upper infotainment display and an 8.6-inch lower display for climate control. The second-gen Audi virtual cockpit boasts a 12.3-inch display, capable of 3D city maps and enhanced infotainment. This screen also offers HD resolution of 1920×720 pixels. Special RS gauges include power output, lap times, g forces and more. The Standard RS seats are upholstered with Valcona leather. The heated RS sport steering wheel features large RS aluminum shift paddles on either side of the wheel.
The starting MSRP for the 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant is $109,000 before taxes and fees. That’s staggering for a wagon. But this isn’t any old wagon. This is a super wagon. And fans are hungry.
