ZCon 2023 - Los Angeles
Z Fans Came West
This story is about the legendary Z-cars from Nissan. Here’s what a quick interweb search turns up: “The Z-Series began in late 1969 (for the 1970 model year) with the Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan and the Datsun 240Z in the US. Its introduction was the culmination of 3 years of research and design that successfully looked to create a modern-styled, two-seater 6-cylinder coupe for the North American market.”
That all sounds pretty simple, forthright, direct (and, it was).
What happened next was the classic story of bring out the right car at the right time, with the right specifications, and at the right price … From the first spy photos in the buff book magazines to this very day five (heading for six) decades later, Datsun/Nissan Z-Cars have been the standard for judging value and customer appreciation for two-place sports cars.
Yeah, there were other sports cars out there, both domestic and imported, but none could really match the triple-threat of price, sleek looks, and/or nicely balanced handling of the 240Z.
Fifty-three years later, the Datsun spirit burns every bit as brightly, and the appreciation for the marque, from the oldest examples to the latest 2023 offerings, is held in high regard and celebrated well and with gusto.
...Which brings us to the July 31-August 5 ZCON gathering and the stand of great events packed in so neatly around SoCal. Here’s a real insider’s look at the excitement, the cool cars, the celebs, and a thousand or more enthusiastic people who all favor your favorite: The Z.
