Despite being necessary and convenient, driving your new vehicle isn’t without risks. Every year, tens of thousands of new automobiles are usually recalled due to manufacturing issues that can pose a danger on the roads. With the first half of 2024 almost done, the American regulators have already filled about 500 recalls.
These recalls are different, and while some affect millions, others affect very few models. Currently, Stellantis, Kia America, and Ford Motor combined have recalled over 6 million units. This means that millions of car owners with defective cars have had to return their new vehicles. Some have had to hire the best lemon law attorney Los Angeles to help them understand the processes. Here are the top four biggest recalls so far:
1. Tesla
Elon Musk’s brand recalled over 2.2 million units on January 30, which is the largest in 2024. Tesla’s recall notice applied to most of the units they have produced since 2012. The affected models included the Cybertruck, Model Y, Model X, Model 3, and Model S.
The NTSA(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) claimed that their anti-lock brake, park, and brake lights were small. Fortunately, their issue is quite minor, and they only had to issue a free software update to adjust it.
2. Ford Motor
Unlike Tesla’s recall, Ford’s recall only affected their 5th generation of Explore SUVs. This recall affected over 1.9 million units, and it came after they received about 164 consumer complaints. When the recall was filled, Ford said that they had already dealt with over 14,000 warranty reports.
According to the filed documents, the clips supporting the trim that covers the SUVs roof support were loose. Most complainants claim that the clips can loosen and fly off the car while driving, which poses a threat to other drivers.
3. Honda Motor
Honda’s recall affected over 700,000 units across their Acura luxury brands. The recall that was filled in February also affected the 2020-2022 Civic, Odyssey, Accord, and Pilot. According to the filled report, the weight sensors of the front passenger seat of these units tend to short-circuit or crash with time. This means that the airbag won’t deploy when a crash occurs.Honda sent notification letters to all their customers informing them that the dealers will be replacing the sensors for free.
4. Stellantis
Our list would be incomplete without mentioning Stellantis who recalled over a million units. The recall was due to a software bug that increases the risk of your car crashing. The model affected include:
Jeep Grand Cherokee (2021-2023)
Dodge Durango (2021-2022)
2022 Ram (3500, 2500, and 1500 models)
The NHTSA reported that the brand’s radio software affects the functionality of their rearview cameras. Stellants plans on updating the software in these units for free.
Endnotes
Vehicle recalls are legal and some are even initiated after the regulators issue a warning. This year Tesla leads our list with over 2.2 million units recalled so far. They’re followed by Ford Motor, who has recalled over 1.9 million SUVs and the Stellantis. Stellantis’ recall affected most of their car models produced between 2021 and 2023. Fortunately, Stellantis and Tesla have only had to update their software for free. Honda has to replace the front passenger seat weight sensor of over 700,000 units.
