While our hometown may have felt a little letdown by a certain horse in a race in New York the day before, a different type of ‘California chrome’ shined brightly this past Sunday at the San Marino Motor Classic. LA Car was on hand to once again document this impressive showcase for Brass Era, Depression Era, and Post War collectible cars.
Lacy Park in San Marino, California served as the grassy stage for approximately 270 classic and modern cars, with a viewing audience of nearly 5,000 spectators. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, the Rotary Club of San Marino, and the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Pre-War marquees such as Packard, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Cadillac, and Auburn were prominently displayed alongside post-war stalwarts like Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Ferrari, and Porsche. But in keeping with Southern California’s all-inclusive spirit, coveted cars from more recent times like Corvettes, GTOs, Thunderbirds, Cobras, and even a nitro funny car also got displayed with pride.
There were 22 separate judging classes represented, with a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton taking the Pre-War Best in Show trophy, and a 1957 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster receiving the Post-War award.
Aaron Weiss, chairman and co-founder of the event, observed, “We feel like we got a really good group of cars this year, especially the European Open and Closed Classes. But really, there are some truly stunning cars in each class this year. We definitely feel lucky.” One could say that this is a field where all the owners come away with that feeling.
