The mechanical geniuses at AMG have laid their hands upon the current A Class. The result is a 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive sedan stunner called the Mercedes-AMG A 35 sedan.

Starting at $32,500, the A Class is meant to be the “entry level” Mercedes Benz. Its targeted at those who want a certain level of luxury but may not have $60k to obtain it.

Considering its status I would not have pegged it for a performance makeover. However, after giving it some thought, the A Class makes the perfect candidate for the AMG treatment.

The Mercedes-AMG A 35 sedan is the German auto maker’s modern take on a classic “sleeper”.

Everything starts under the hood. Usually the A Class makes a respectable but modest 188 horsepower from its 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

AMG took that same engine and massaged it with a combination of software management and a twin-scroll turbocharger. The end result is an extra 114 horsepower bringing the grand total to 302.

Torque is also boosted up to 295 ft-lbs which is up from the standard 221 ft-lbs.

An AMG “SPEEDSHIFT” dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission gives the Mercedes-AMG A 35 sedan faster shifts and adds launch control for those times when you really want to shock someone off the line.

Speaking of track days, the “AMG TRACK PACE” system is available as an option. The system is essentially a data acquisition program so that drivers can log lap times and other vehicle information so users can improve lap times.

With this level of performance wrapped neatly in a subtly luxurious package, the Mercedes-AMG A 35 sedan certainly has potential. If the opportunity to review one arises we’ll keep you posted.
