The highly-anticipated silent brute brings the Motor City into the electric truck foray, and our very own Reed Berry got a first look at the GMC Hummer EV.

Hummer?

Yes, that Hummer. The same Hummer that made big, badass, gas-guzzling vehicles from the 1990s up to around 2010. Your dream of owning a huge, expensive road hog will soon come true in a cool new way.

Hummer is making a comeback with the big, impressive 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1, a first-of-its-kind zero emission supertruck. The size and bold styling definitely screams Hummer, but this one, set to arrive in showrooms in late 2021, is a guilt-free electric vehicle with impressive power and even more impressive range of up to 350 miles (or more) on a single charge.

The Hummer EV is powered by General Motors’ all-new Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive, GM’s proprietary EV drive unit. Boasting a best-in-class 1,000 horsepower and GM-estimated 11,500 lb-ft of torque generated by three separate motors within two Ultium drive units, this vehicle is equipped to do some serious driving. We're talking 0-60 mph in around three seconds!

Unfortunately, I won’t have an opportunity to road test one for a while, but I did get up-close and personal with a display model and I like what I see. Needless to say, the interior is very spacious with all the latest tech features to keep you comfortable, entertained and in control with a 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen and 12.3-inch diagonal driver display.

As someone who takes an interest in space, I appreciate the lunar theme of the vehicle.

Each door panel inside the vehicle seems to have what appears to be simply a unique design. But, if you look a bit closer, it is actually a map of the Sea of Tranquility, the site of the first lunar landing. Peel back the carpet over the driver's footrest and you'll see the boot print of astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. The color scheme, both interior and exterior, represent the colors used on the lunar module and lunar rover.

Speaking of space, you can pull over and look at the stars on a clear night through the infinity roof above or, if you want to bring the outside in, you can actually remove the transparent sky panels and store them in the “frunk,” a handy storage compartment in the front of the vehicle where, in most vehicles, the engine would be. According to GM, the removable roof is possible because of the structural rigidity created by Hummer’s large battery pack.

Ever thought how convenient it would be if your car could be driven diagonally on challenging terrain? You can with Hummer’s “CrabWalk" a cool feature that allows you to steer the front and rear wheels at the same angle at low speeds, thereby allowing diagonal movement.

Are you ready for hands-free driving? Hummer EV will also feature the latest version of Super Cruise, an available driver assistance feature that will allow you to drive hands-free on 200,000 miles of enabled roads. There is also an automatic lane changing feature that can determine when a lane change is optimal, then signal and execute the maneuver.

And how much will it cost you to own the road in this impressive vehicle, you ask? The suggested price of Hummer EV Edition 1 is $112,595, with less expensive models to follow. And be advised that Hummer is not the only player in the EV supertruck game. The Rivian R1T, starting at $67,500 with a 300+ mile range, and the Tesla Cybertruck, starting at $39,900 with a 250 mile range, are also due out in 2021.
