Based on the severely underrated Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the new Giulia GTA brings back the legendary GTA acronym. In 1965, the iconic Giulia Sprint GTA made its debut, paving the future of Alfa Romeo. 55 years later, the GTA name makes a return, embodying that same desire for track prowess. GTA stands for “Gran Turismo Alleggerita” (alleggerrita being the Italian term for “lightened”), and this new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA has definitely been hitting the gym.

Alfa Romeo has announced two versions, the GTA and the GTAm, the latter being the road-legal track edition. Only 500 individually numbered examples will be created giving owners true exclusivity. Customers who purchase a GTA will also receive a Bell helmet in special GTA livery, a full racing set by Alpinestars (race suit, gloves and shoes) and a personalized Goodwool car cover. A special driving course devised by Alfa Romeo Driving Academy is also included.

Keeping with the alleggerita theme, the GTA shows off weight loss, 220 pounds to be exact. Alfa has adopted extensive carbon fiber work, giving the GTA a carbon fiber drive shaft, hood, roof, front bumper, front wheel arches and rear wheel arch inserts. The GTAm boasts a two-seater configuration approved for on-road use. This performance version also includes a rollcage, two racing seats, six-point safety harnesses, and the rear basin has spots for a fire extinguisher and helmets.

Under the hood, the Quadrifoglio’s 2.9L Bi-Turbo V6 has been boosted from 510hp to 540hp. That’s enough to get the GTA from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds assisted by the Launch Control system. Alfa Romeo claims that the GTA also boasts a best-in-class power/weight ratio of 6.2lb/hp. By teaming up with Sauber Engineering and using the Sauber Aerokit, the GTA was specifically designed around downforce. The large spoiler featured in this article’s pictures is from the GTAm and is not present on the GTA version. The 20-inch lock wheels and Akrapovič titanium central exhaust system are both new for the GTA. Springs, shocks and bushings have been refined to better hug corners.

Inside, Alcantara covers nearly everything, from the dashboard to the side pillars. A unique lightweight resin called Lexan is used in the window frames around the GTA. In the GTAm, belts replace door handles, a touch directly from the motorsport world.

What do you think? Is the Giulia GTA/GTAm worth it? Or is a normal Quadrifolgio enough?
