Everyone loves throwbacks. In fact, most muscle cars today are styled around their iconic ancestors’ looks. The old-school-turned-new-school aesthetic is proving to be incredibly popular and we’re currently in the midst of performance car revival. The second Golden Age, if you will. The Platinum Age?

The Ford GT has harkened back to the original GT40 in the two generations since the 60s. That’s what makes them so recognizable – the mid 2000’s GT and the current GT are absolutely unmistakable. The GT is no stranger to throwback editions, and Ford is about to drop another one.

On Sunday, August 16, in partnership with the Petersen Automotive Museum, Ford will unveil the 2021 Ford GT Heritage Edition on the final day of Petersen Car Week.

In the clip above, the new Heritage Edition will resemble the #98 Ford GT40 that Ken Miles drove to victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona. The original #98 had trademark red patches on the side, a black hood, and number 98 gumballs on the doors.

From the clip, we only see a side profile of the new Heritage Edition, but we’ll get the full spectacle on Sunday. Petersen Car Week is a virtual car celebration running from August 12-16 on the Petersen Museum’s YouTube channel, which is where the reveal will take place.

I really admire what Ford is doing with the GT. Heritage or throwback editions aren’t cheesy or tasteless. Ford does a fantastic job altering the old to the new while respecting the legacy of the originals. This new Heritage Edition will surely be limited to a handful of cars, making them potentially extremely desirable down the road.

I’m eager to see how this new Heritage Edition honors a machine driven by the late great Ken Miles.
